Flat inspection assignment in Stirling - January 16, 2010

All senior couples in our mission have assignments to inspect missionary flats every six weeks. Our assignment takes us to Dunfermline, Alloa, and Stirling. The drive north of Edinburgh to these cities is beautiful, across the Firth of Forth (the mouth of the River Forth).

Here are the Alloa elders looking very pleased with themselves because their flat was so clean and tidy and we brought them cookies! The young missionaries in our mission are so capable, courageous, and fun that we relish any opportunity we have to mingle with them. We visited three flats - two sisters and four elders - and all passed inspection with flying colors.

After flat inspections, we got out first glimpse of Stirling Castle, one of the "must see" castles in this land of many castles. Stirling is the "cock pit" (as in chicken fighting) of Scotland. In early history, whoever controlled Stirling, controlled Scotland. Stirling had the only bridge to cross the Forth River to get to the Highlands and many battles were fought here for control of the bridge. Stirling today is still on the dividing line between the Highlands and the Lowlands.

It was a bitter cold, wet afternoon while we visited Stirling and our pictures left something to be desired. We will return. Here, David, our fun guide with the heaviest Scottish brogue we've encountered yet (he's from Glasgow and they are reputed to be the hardest to understand) shares some of Stirling Castle history.

Across the valley from Stirling Castle is the William Wallace (Braveheart) monument. Note our trusty little Vauxhall Meriva that is our transportation while we're here. It's no good on snow and ice, but gets us where we need to go.
